St Albans is only thirty five kilometres north of London. It grew up around the Roman settlement of Verulamium and takes its name from the Roman soldier who was the first Christian martyr in Britain. The place of his execution was marked by a cathedral on the hilltop overlooking the current town. The nearby clock tower affords fabulous views over the Norman cathedral and the town. Verulamium Park nearby is full of Roman remains and the Museum has incredible mosaics. What is left of the Roman Theatre is also nearby and still under excavation to reveal more treasures.
